South Serves is the digital platform the University of South Alabama uses to post, and respond to volunteer opportunities both on and off campus. South Serves is also where volunteer hours are logged and managed.
South Serves houses hundreds on volunteer opportunities for community partners, student organizations, greek life, and
campus departments; service learning courses; community events; and much more!
No, South Serves is open to all students, faculty, and staff (individuals and groups). Everyone is encouraged to squeeze
service into your schedule. South Serves has opportunities on campus and off campus.
91¶ÌÊÓÆµ is committed to being a good neighbor. University-community engagement enriches scholarship and research, enhances teaching and learning, and prepares an engaged workforce. Plus it’s FUN!

1. Activities for Internal Benefit:

  • Activities that are a requirement of a position OR that primarily benefit your organization.

  • Conducting regular business of a student organization (i.e. student recruitment, membership meetings, etc.).

2. Donations

  • Donations of ANY type (i.e. money, supplies, clothing, food collections, etc.).

  • The ONLY exception is BLOOD Donation (donor will receive a maximum of 45 minutes of donation time).

3. Fundraising OR Philanthropy:

  • Attending a fundraising activity.

  • Staffing or Implementing the activity.

  • Greek, philanthropic events

  • Percentage or profit-share nights, or working an event to raise money for the national Greek organization.

4. For-Profit Businesses OR Organizations:

  • Projects completed for a for-profit business or organization, even if the work was unpaid.

  • Any substantial activities of this kind should be pursued as an internship opportunity.

5. Self-Directed Projects:

  • Any project without the oversight of a supporting community organization (i.e. trash pick-up, recycling, yard work, etc.)

  • Participation in self-improvement workshops, clinics, conferences, or conventions.

6. Research:

  • Participating in a research project, as a participant OR a researcher.

7. Internships, Clinicals, Practicums, OR Field Experience:

  • UNLESS connected with a Service Learning course, internships, clinicals, practicums, field experiences, job shadowing or observing are NOT counted as volunteer hours.
